Maryann DeSalvo: Maryann’s life drastically changed almost thirty years ago when she was diagnosed with insulin dependent diabetes. Instead of looking at the diagnosis as a hindrance, she began to study the effects that different foods have on diabetes management. Her desire for understanding the role that nutrition has on diabetes led her to become a registered dietitian/nutritionist. Maryann has both personal and clinical experience in diabetes management. She is aware of the different factors that affect blood sugar including nutrition, exercise, activity and stress. Maryann has successfully provided nutritional education and counseling to diabetics for many years. She knows first hand how difficult and frustrating it can be to manage diabetes. She teaches newly diagnosed patients that despite the challenges they may face, they are not alone. She encourages them to aim for good glucose control. Maryann also has over twenty years experience working in long term care and rehabilitation settings. She is very knowledgeable in the nutritional needs of the elderly and the obstacles that they sometimes face in achieving proper nutrition.
